The Northeast USA is one of the most beautiful places. I have lived here for years and dream to settle down in that area one day. If you’re looking for a truly one-of-a-kind destination for your fall foliage getaway here are some ideas and some places you can visit this fall.
Upstate New York ( 1 Oct - 15 Nov)
Waterfalls, lakes, vineyards, and autumn colors...need I say more? This is the place to be in the fall season. I know, I am biased but for me, this is my home in America, and it is perfect :)
This is the perfect weekend getaway from the big cities in the east with beautiful destinations all around
Day 1: Niagara Falls & Rochester, NY
Day 2: Finger Lakes and Letchworth Park
New England ( 1 Oct - 15 Nov)
If you are in any major city in New England such as Boston or Rhode Island you can just stand in line for a cup of pumpkin pie latte and enjoy ;) But if you are willing to drive a couple of hours from the city you will be amazed to see the colors around you.
I had the opportunity to visit New Hampshire in October and I kid you not I saw different shades on every single tree and every single leaf. With a backdrop of brilliant foliage and quaint little towns, this region is made for the autumn season.
Portland, Oregon ( 10 Oct - 20 Nov)
I know the West Coast of the USA is not known for its autumn season but if you are unable to visit the east coast this is one of the best places to see changes in colors.
You can see golden blush at the beginning of October and peak by end of the October.
You can visit places around Portland but my recommendation is to visit Crater Lake during the month of October. On the way to Crater lake, you get to see these beautiful colors everywhere and as you reach the lake area you can see some snow in the mountains. You get to experience best of the both worlds in one visit.
Northern California ( 1Nov - 1 Dec )
Just because you live in California doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy fall colors. There is a number of location where you can see a change in colors Napa Valley & Mammoth Lakes are the two places I have visited during this season.
Alaska (1 Sept - 20 Oct)
I know I sound silly when I recommend Alaska as a fall destination. But listen to me you get the best of Alaska during this season. Days are long enough to cover day hikes, weather is not so cold that you can't enjoy outdoor activities but the bonus is you can see the Northern lights at the night. If you are in southern Alaska Fat bear view is a fun activity you can enjoy unique in Alaska.
The fall season is very very short in Alaska you can see leaves changing colors at the beginning of September. By the end of October season is over and sometimes there is snow on the ground on 31 October.
Make sure to enjoy your pumpkin-spiced food :)
